A Beginner's Guide to Actually Understanding Photography

Like, "why is everything blurry?" and "why does this photo look like it was taken in a dungeon?" levels of terrible. But here's the thing—every professional photographer you admire was once exactly where you are right now, staring at their camera like it's a spaceship control panel.

The good news? Your camera isn't actually that complicated once you understand a few key concepts. The even better news? We're going to break those concepts down in a way that actually makes sense, without all the technical jargon that makes your eyes glaze over.

So grab your camera, maybe a cup of coffee (or wine, we don't judge), and let's dive into the fundamentals that will transform you from someone who shoots in Auto mode to someone who actually knows what all those buttons and dials do.


1. The Exposure Triangle Explained (AKA: The Holy Trinity of Photography)

Alright, let's start with the big one—the Exposure Triangle. This is literally the foundation of everything in photography, and once you understand it, you'll feel like you've been given the secret decoder ring to how cameras work. The Exposure Triangle consists of three elements that work together to determine how bright or dark your photo is: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. Think of them like three siblings who have to share one slice of pizza—if one takes more, the others have to adjust or someone's going hungry.

Aperture: The Eye of Your Camera

Aperture is how wide your lens opens to let light in, measured in f-stops (like f/1.8, f/5.6, etc.). Here's where it gets confusing for beginners: a LOWER f-stop number means a WIDER opening (more light), and a HIGHER f-stop number means a NARROWER opening (less light).

We know, we know—it's backwards from what seems logical. Just remember: small number = big opening = more light. Big number = small opening = less light.

But aperture doesn't just control light—it also controls your depth of field, which is how much of your image is in focus. A wide aperture (like f/1.8) gives you that beautiful blurry background (called "bokeh"), while a narrow aperture (like f/16) keeps everything from front to back sharp.

When to use what:

  • Wide aperture (f/1.4-f/2.8): Portraits, low light, creating dreamy backgrounds
  • Medium aperture (f/4-f/8): General shooting, small groups
  • Narrow aperture (f/11-f/22): Landscapes, large groups, when you need everything in focus

Shutter Speed: Freezing Time (Or Not)

Shutter speed is how long your camera's shutter stays open, measured in fractions of a second (like 1/500, 1/60) or full seconds (1", 2"). The longer it's open, the more light gets in, but also the more motion blur you might capture.

Fast shutter speeds (like 1/1000) freeze action—perfect for sports, kids running, or that moment your dog finally catches the frisbee. Slow shutter speeds (like 1/30 or slower) let you capture motion blur, create silky waterfalls, or accidentally turn your friend into a ghost if they move during the shot.

The golden rule: Your shutter speed should generally be at least 1/focal length to avoid camera shake. So if you're shooting with a 50mm lens, use at least 1/50. With a 200mm lens? At least 1/200. This keeps your images sharp when handholding.

ISO: The Sensitivity Booster

ISO is your camera sensor's sensitivity to light. Lower ISO (like 100 or 200) means less sensitivity, which gives you cleaner, higher-quality images. Higher ISO (like 3200 or 6400) means more sensitivity, which helps in dark situations but introduces "noise" (that grainy texture you see in low-light photos).

Think of ISO like turning up the volume on speakers—sure, you can crank it up to hear better, but at a certain point, you're just adding distortion.

Modern cameras are amazing at high ISO these days, but we still recommend keeping it as low as possible for your situation. Start at ISO 100-400 for outdoor shooting, and only increase it when you absolutely need to.

How They Work Together

Here's where the magic happens. These three elements are constantly balancing each other:

  • Want a blurry background for a portrait? Use a wide aperture (f/2.8). Now you have lots of light coming in, so you'll need a faster shutter speed (1/500) to compensate.
  • Shooting a landscape at f/16 for sharpness? That tiny aperture lets in less light, so you'll need to slow down your shutter speed (1/60) or raise your ISO (800) to get a proper exposure.
  • Taking photos of your kid's soccer game? You need a fast shutter speed (1/1000) to freeze the action, so you might need to open your aperture wider (f/4) or increase your ISO (1600) to let in enough light.

It's a constant dance, and with practice, these adjustments will become second nature. We promise!


2. Five Common Exposure Mistakes Portrait Photographers Make (We've Made Them All)

Now that you understand the Exposure Triangle, let's talk about the mistakes we see beginners make all the time—because we've made every single one of them ourselves. Multiple times. Sometimes in the same photoshoot.

Mistake #1: Shooting Wide Open All the Time

We get it—that f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens is sexy, and that creamy bokeh is addictive. When Stephanie first got her 50mm f/1.4, she shot EVERYTHING at f/1.4 for about three months. The problem? At those super-wide apertures, your depth of field is razor-thin.

Shooting a single person straight-on? You might have sharp eyes but a blurry nose and ears. Shooting two people? Good luck getting both of them in focus unless they're exactly the same distance from the camera.

The fix: Try f/2.8 or f/4 for portraits. You'll still get beautiful background blur, but you'll have enough depth of field to keep your subject's entire face sharp. For couples or small groups, we often shoot at f/4 or even f/5.6.

Mistake #2: Ignoring Your Histogram

The back of your camera shows you a preview of your image, but here's the problem—that screen is a dirty liar. It looks different in bright sunlight versus shade, and the brightness setting can make an overexposed image look perfect.

The histogram is the graph that shows the distribution of tones in your image. Learn to read it! If all the data is bunched up on the right side, you're overexposed (too bright). If it's all on the left, you're underexposed (too dark). You want a nice bell curve in the middle (though this varies by scene).

The fix: Turn on your histogram display and check it after every few shots, especially when the lighting changes. It's objective truth in a world of subjective screens.

Mistake #3: Being Afraid to Bump Your ISO

When Alfred started, he was terrified of going above ISO 400 because some forum told him anything higher would "ruin" his images. So he'd use slow shutter speeds instead, resulting in blurry photos that were actually ruined.

Here's the truth: a sharp photo with some noise is infinitely better than a blurry photo with no noise. Plus, modern cameras handle high ISO incredibly well, and you can always reduce noise in editing.

The fix: Don't be afraid of ISO 1600, 3200, or even higher if you need it. The "correct" ISO is whatever gets you a properly exposed, sharp image. Period.

Mistake #4: Not Metering for Skin Tones

Your camera's meter wants to make everything middle gray (18% gray, to be technical). This works fine for many scenes, but it completely fails when you're photographing people with very light or very dark skin.

If you're photographing someone with dark skin and trust your camera's meter, it'll try to brighten them to middle gray, overexposing the image. With someone with very light skin, it'll try to darken them, underexposing the shot.

The fix: Learn to meter for skin tones specifically. We often use spot metering mode and meter off our subject's face, then adjust our exposure compensation (+1 or -1 stop) based on their skin tone. It takes practice, but it's a game-changer.

Mistake #5: Forgetting to Adjust for Changing Light

Oh man, we've done this so many times. You get your exposure perfect for that beautiful shaded area, then you move into direct sunlight and keep shooting with the same settings. Suddenly everything is blown out and you're wondering why your camera betrayed you.

Light changes constantly—clouds move, you move, your subject moves from sun to shade. Your settings need to change with it.

The fix: Check your exposure regularly throughout the shoot, especially when you change locations or when you see the light shifting. It becomes habit after a while, we swear.


3. Understanding Aperture (Let's Go Deeper)

We touched on aperture in the Exposure Triangle section, but it deserves more attention because it's probably the single most powerful creative tool in your camera. Mastering aperture is the difference between "someone with a camera" and "someone who takes intentional, creative photos."

The Numbers Game

Let's demystify those f-stop numbers once and for all. The "f" stands for focal ratio, and the number is actually a fraction. So f/2 is really f/2.0, which is a bigger opening than f/4.0. That's why the numbers are backwards—they're denominators!

Here's a helpful way Stephanie finally understood it: Think of it like slicing a pizza. If you're dividing the pizza by 2 (f/2), each person gets a BIGGER slice than if you're dividing by 8 (f/8). Bigger denominator = smaller slice = less light.

The Full Stops

Aperture values are usually shown in full stops, and each full stop either doubles or halves the amount of light:

f/1.4 → f/2 → f/2.8 → f/4 → f/5.6 → f/8 → f/11 → f/16 → f/22

Going from f/2.8 to f/4 is "closing down" by one stop (halving the light). Going from f/4 to f/2.8 is "opening up" by one stop (doubling the light).

Most modern cameras also let you adjust in 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments, giving you finer control.

Depth of Field Magic

This is where aperture gets really fun. Depth of field (DOF) is the zone of acceptable sharpness in your image, and aperture is the main controller of this creative superpower. But here's what many beginners don't realize: aperture isn't the ONLY thing that affects depth of field. Three factors work together:

  1. Aperture: Wider (lower f-number) = shallower DOF
  2. Distance to subject: Closer to subject = shallower DOF
  3. Focal length: Longer lens (like 85mm vs 35mm) = shallower DOF

This means you can create a shallow depth of field even at f/5.6 if you get close to your subject and use a longer lens. Conversely, that f/1.8 lens at f/1.8 won't give you much background blur if you're shooting a landscape from 50 feet away.

Practical Aperture Choices

After thousands of portrait sessions, here's what we typically use:

  • f/1.4-f/2: Solo portraits when we want that dreamy, editorial look with super creamy backgrounds. We're careful about focus placement here.
  • f/2.8-f/4: Our bread and butter for individual portraits and couples. Enough DOF to keep faces sharp, enough blur to separate from the background.
  • f/5.6-f/8: Small family groups (3-5 people) or when we need a bit more environmental context in the shot.
  • f/8-f/11: Larger family groups or when we want both the subject and a meaningful background element in focus.

The Sweet Spot

Every lens has a "sweet spot"—an aperture where it's sharpest and has the best optical performance. This is usually 2-3 stops down from wide open. So if you have an f/1.8 lens, it'll likely be sharpest at f/4 or f/5.6.

Does this mean you should always shoot at the sweet spot? Nope! Sometimes you need that f/1.8 for creative reasons or low light. But it's good to know that closing down a bit from wide open usually gives you sharper images.


4. Natural Light Mastery: Golden Hour Guide

Okay, let's talk about the holy grail of natural light photography: Golden Hour. This is that magical time when the light is so gorgeous that even mediocre photographers (like we were in the beginning) can create stunning images.

What Is Golden Hour, Exactly?

Golden hour happens twice a day: in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. The sun is low on the horizon, creating warm, diffused, directional light that makes everything look like a movie scene.

But here's the secret nobody tells you: "golden hour" isn't always exactly an hour, and it varies dramatically based on:

  • Your latitude (closer to the equator = shorter golden hour)
  • The season (summer golden hour lasts longer than winter)
  • Weather conditions (clouds can extend or diffuse golden hour light)

We use apps like Golden Hour One or Photographer's Ephemeris to plan our shoots, but honestly, in our area (adjust this for your location!), we aim to start shooting about 1.5-2 hours before sunset for the best variety of light.

The Three Phases of Evening Golden Hour

Most people think golden hour is just "that pretty warm light," but it actually has distinct phases:

Phase 1: The Pre-Golden Hour (2 hours before sunset) The sun is still pretty high, but the harshness is starting to soften. This is great for shaded areas or backlighting. The light isn't super warm yet, but it's getting more directional and flattering.

Phase 2: True Golden Hour (1 hour before sunset) This is the money time. The sun is low, the light is warm and golden, and shadows are long and soft. Everything you point your camera at looks gorgeous. This is when we shoot the majority of our session.

Phase 3: Blue Hour (20-40 minutes after sunset) After the sun dips below the horizon, you get this beautiful blue-ish, even light. It's dimmer, so you'll need to increase ISO and slow your shutter speed, but the results are incredibly romantic and moody.

How to Use Golden Hour Light

Backlighting (Our Favorite) Position your subject between you and the sun. This creates that beautiful rim light around their hair and shoulders, often with gorgeous lens flare.

The trick? Your camera's meter will underexpose your subject because of all the bright light behind them. Either:

  • Use spot metering on your subject's face
  • Dial in +1 to +2 stops of exposure compensation
  • Shoot in manual and expose for your subject, letting the background go bright

We probably shoot 70% of our golden hour work backlit because it's just so flattering and dreamy.

Side Lighting Position the sun to the left or right of your subject. This creates beautiful dimension and sculpts the face with light and shadow. It's less dreamy than backlighting but more dramatic.

Front Lighting Having the sun behind you, lighting your subject's face, can work but tends to make people squint. We rarely do this during golden hour because you lose all that magical backlight potential.

The Weather Wildcard

Here's something we wish someone had told us earlier: cloudy or partly cloudy golden hours can be even MORE beautiful than clear ones.

Clouds act like giant diffusers and can create incredible color displays. Some of our favorite images have happened when we thought the session might be ruined by clouds, but they ended up creating this stunning pink and purple light show.

The Golden Hour Challenge

For the next week, we challenge you to photograph something—anything—during golden hour every day. Your coffee mug, your pet, yourself in a window, whatever. Just get out there and play with the light. Notice how it changes throughout the hour, experiment with different angles, and watch how quickly you improve at reading and using natural light.
